The Secret to Shahid Afridi's Popularity in Pakistan

Having wondered for a while why a ball-biting, completely certifiable player like Afridi is so popular amongst his own, I discovered this purely by chance - Pakistani children are brainwashed from childhood to love him.

And how do they do this? Pakistan has its own special version of the children's television show, Sesame Street, where Ernie - of Ernie and Bert fame - has been remodelled to look like Afridi. Check this:

It explains a lot, huh?

Haha. On a more serious note, I think it's Afridi's timing -- when to quit a format and when to make a comeback till he quits again -- which kept him out of the imbroglio.

To be honest, I really like Afridi. I think he's a real personality. I just found this picture and couldn't resist. It really looks like him.

I think he was probably kept out of said imbroglio by not actually doing anything wrong. I hope so, anyway. I was very fond of Amir, I will be devastated if my second favourite 'Stani turns out to be dodgy as well.

Ahhhh, I'm your first favourite Stani? How sweet :)

Where's Afridi's other arm in that pic? Did he take ball biting a bit too far?

His arm is being twisted behind his back by a dodgy bookie. He is holding out nicely, though. Good Boy.

Stani, if you're my favourite 'Stani then Afridi slips to third after Amir. Unless Amir is actually guilty, then everyone shuffles around again. Kakmal places fourth at the moment. He's still all cuddly.

But what do you use to judge Sid? Is it cricketing ability, general cuteness or innocence? I think I'd score high in all of those and Purna, Sunny and Nightmare will back me up :)

So come on, admit it, I'm number one. There is no 'if' about it.

Kakmal fourth? Ewww!

Do I really have to admit in public that you're #1? You know that secretly you are, isn't that enough?

I wrote my comment twice and both times something intervened and I couldn't post it. Well I'm here for the third time then.

I think I like Afridi too Sid and can't really fathom why. Maybe because he is a potty screwball; he's always so entertaining.

And Stani, how much more self-delusional do you need to get? You get a zero in all three criteria from me. Okay, I'll be a bit nicer and give you a one.
*lalala, it's so much fun to be mean*

Thanks for sharing the link, but unfortunately it seems to be down... Does anybody have a mirror or another source? Please answer to my post if you do!

I would appreciate if a staff member here at beerandsport.net could post it.

Thanks,
Thomas

Hi Thomas ... are you from beerandsport.net? Which link are you talking about?

Stani, please don't make me hug you. I beg you.

Stani Army said...

Why? Was it all the queuing you had to do to hug me last time that is putting you off?

(I win :) again :P)

And hey, the comment moderation is definitely working again.

That leaves me no excuse to prevent you from commenting, Stani.

Yeh yeh yeh, keep telling the world that you hate me. You can't fool the masses Siddy Widdy, they can see the love in your hate :)

He is/was sickeningly popular amongst teenage bimbos in Bangladesh as well. It's really rather baffling
