Sledging we can handle, cheating we can do without

Well, it seems that (when Australia win at least) you can't handle sledging either, but selective memory is a gem.

I don't have much to say today, really. The highlights showed an Australia that has clearly lost faith. The body language was horrible. The feeling was so bad, it even had Shane Watson swearing. Which was actually a bit funny, because I didn't even know he knew such language. He is probably whipping himself with his pink skipping rope as I write.

I was a bit stunned by the crowd boo-ing Ian Bell, but when you compare it to this I think a few boos are justified.

widly celebrating? he put his hand up, jumped and gave a half-hearted shout. Then said to Cook, "I'm not sure"

"Nobody will ever know for sure whether he realised this, but it would require a very trusting nature to give him the benefit of the doubt."

Why? Because he's not English and must, therefore, have cheated? I'm not seeing any other possible reason here.

Is it not possible that Hughes simply didn't realise it had hit the ground? Evidently others thought it did, including the writer of this article who admits that Bell "appeared to clip one off the bowling of Michael Beer".

Now the truly unpleasant elements in the English cricket fan's / journalist's begin to show themselves. As to what happened, Matthew is spot on - hardly an intention to deceive, à la Kumble eventually claiming a catch off Gilly at the G in 1999, i.e. takes the ball, turns round to get back to his mark and only then appeals when his team-mates surround him.

Sorry; should have typed 'nature' after 'journalist's' in that last post.

Ian Botham can be a pompous prick at times...this was one such instance...Hughes was clearly unsure if he took the catch cleanly, and the right steps were followed and the right decision taken..where's the cheating in that?
Bell was also in the right, since Snicko and Hotspot were themselves inconclusive...He referred the decision upstairs and the final call rests with the umpire..you can't blame him for that...
finally, thanks for putting in my head, the image of watson whipping himself with a pink skipping rope :(

Ignore the Daily Racist though, the guys a gumfer.

Just watched the Highlights on the ECB website. Not the best of places as it didn't show the aftermath of the Hughes catch. Clearly a bump ball but as Cook said, he wasn't sure. It was everyone elses joy that probably convinced him.

As for Bell....oh dear. Snicked it far as I'm concerned, the slightest of feathers but it was there.
Dunno if he was trying to game it or geniunely wasn't sure but wrong decision.

What Bell did was worse!!! You telling me he don't know if he's nicked the ball? Bell knew, Snicko knew and the machine that is Aleem Dar knew.

As for Hughes, I think he knew BUT, and here is the difference, as a young man, as the appeal went up, he just didn't have it in him to say no at that point in time to his team mates and thousands of cheering people. The best way he could get out of the situation was to ask. He just found himself in a difficult situation. Different from Bell.

Botham is just and uncultured moronic yob.

Sid, Botham is the Daily Mail incarnate, don't bother reading the bloke as he know's his audience which is just about the best that can be said about the arrogant chap.

I have been a little disappointed at being so naive in expecting my adopted countrymen to behave a little better in victory.
I'd always thought that gross triumphalism was one of the less edifying traits of we Strayans. I'm now realising it's universal and my eyes are opening to the fact that the superior attitude, (it's all about the game, don't you know) was merely a cover for the disappointment of losing all the time. :-)
Poms can be just as graceless as anyone. Hooray?

I know it's only the daily mail and I shouldn't let it make me angry but to invoke the C word is going too far. Comments via phone not good. More later.

Fuck fuck fuck ad infinitum.

Beggy, it's funny though, no? Sports fans are sports fans the world over. Triumphalism is what it's all about.

It's like they couldn't stand ODI's and 20/20's till they became good at them, then the English journos started talking about the craft and discipline that England had brought to 20/20.

With pretty much straight faces too. Ha, ha.

Sidthegnomenator said...

Beggy, aren't you in the UK as well? Haven't you felt this triumphalism before, like in 2005 and 2009 - and in the fact the 2007 seems to have been wiped from collective local memory?

Craig said...

Aye, 2007 seems to have been forgotten about completely. Was the same last year, 2005 highlights, 2009....wait, wasn't there another one??

Fortunately, it sounds like Flower and Strauss are the sort of people who won't.

Apparantly they're still at the SCG having team talks / being drunk.

Sidthegnomenator said...

They have a right to still be at the SCG being drunk. I hope the Aussies are still at the SCG being whipped by Twatto's pink skipping rope.
