Ricky Ponting resigns and the BBC manages to piss me off (again)

And so the deed, the deed that has been talked about and debated for some time, is done - Ricky Ponting has stepped down as Australia's test and ODI captain. Sad as it is, I guess it has been coming for a while but I have to worry that the idiots that run Cricket Australia will see this as the answer to all problems and won't bother to look any deeper. Like a lot of other Australian fans, I also worry that we don't yet have a replacement that comes anywhere near Ponting.

But 'tis done.

And now onto the sham process of shortlisting potential new captains, pretending to review their records and listen to various cricket-y people around Australia as to who should be given the job - then giving it to Michael Clarke.

And my old foe, the BBC breakfast reporter Nicky Clarke, reported the story this morning finishing it by only saying "that's Ricky Ponting, who has lost three Ashes series as captain. And now ... "

And his partner, Rachel Burden, interrupts him "I would like to point out that the report we have does say Ricky Ponting who lost three Ashes series but then goes on to list all the things he won."

Clarke: "Uh, yes it does ..."
Burden: "Good. Go on ..."

hehehehe ... I think I could become a fan of Rachel Burden.

Much as I'd obviously like like Clarke to captain for pure selfish reasons, he doesn't seem the right call.

Who would you like to see as skip? Cameron White?

I wish Simon Katich was 5 years younger, then he would be an ideal choice.

Cameron White needs to earn a place in the team beore he is considered.

I actually do see Clarke as the right choice. Till now he's been nurtured as the next skipper and will make a good skipper I believe. I know I say "God Help Australia" if Clarke becomes skipper but I think he'll do a pretty decent job.

Plus if the captaincy is given to someone else now, which Clarke thinks rightfully belongs to him, won't there be an atmosphere of mistrust and jealousy in the dressing room? And Australia needs Clarke the batsman. Similar thing happened in India when Yuvraj came out in the open and said he was expecting to be the skipper and not 'new boy' Dhoni and despite these two being close friends, there has been a strong sense of belief that untill a few years ago not all has been well with these two.

I think Clarke is the best option under the circumstances, but ideally I would've liked Ponting to stick around a bit longer. I'm definitely with you, Matthew - Katich would've been the ideal replacement if only he was a bit younger.

I imagine Watson and Haddin will be the names thrown around, but I don't want either. Hads's temperament is not good - as we saw yet again against Pakistan the other week - and Watson is just not smart enough to have to focus on batting, bowling and being captain at the same time. I think his pretty little head should focus on what he is doing right now.

White? Maybe for ODI but ... no, I don't see it.

Don't worry, Poshin, they won't give it to anyone else. They will pretend to consider others, but ultimately it will be Pup's.

Ricky's decision is not correct. If a team defeats in a match it is not depending on one person. If all the players played well then only any team can get good score and also can win the match.

At this stage, it would not matter if Donald Bradman was Captain. This is a bad team with even worse leadership. Ricky Ponting has made the most of a decimated team [remember that over half their team turned over since two years ago],and despite "some struggles" at the crease, he is still one of the most dangerous batters and finest leaders ever to wear the Baggy Green.

Shame on you ACB!

Robert, I totally agree. He has been the only world class player in a team largely consisting of the merely above average. If this is the only action CA take, I will be very pissed off. There are much deeper changes needed than just the (arguable) change in leadership.

well, that becomes his moral duty after the Ashes loss, and now he must be forced to leave

@IPL2011 if we worked on that theory, England would have had a different captain every couple of years through the 90s. I hope Ponting stood down of his own accord. I don't like the idea that he was pushed #indenial
